Interesting review. I haven’t read fiction since I was in high school. I personally prefer non-fiction books. I do agree though, that some books leave an impression that you recall years later. For me those books are the V.C.Andrews “Flowers in the Attic” Series. I read all the books available back then again when I was in High School. I was in the library every week, picking up the next volume. Although they tried, they never made a movie as good as the books. And after her death, the books in the series weren’t as good as her writing. Also another series that left an impression was the Harry Potter series, which I read as an adult. My son would read one book, then I would read it and we would discuss them together. I still have 7 of the 8 books.
I like that - especially the part about reading Harry Potter alongside your son. That kind of shared experience probably makes the story stay with you in a completely different way.
And I get what you mean about certain books leaving an imprint, even years later. It’s not always about the genre, more about how they make you feel at the time you read them. Sounds like that series stayed with you in a very specific way.

I love anything Gothic and actually spent senior year reading all the Gothic novels Austen mocks in Northanger Abbey and everything else between The Castle of Otranto and Melmoth the Wanderer. There's an amazing novel by Sarah Perry title Melmoth and I highly recommend it for its prose, its twisty storyline, its narrators, and its magic. I've read it twice and it's on by TBRR pile.
