I am writing this with the sound of waves still somewhere in my body. You know that feeling when a place stays with you long after you have left? Mauritius did that to me. Honestly, it slipped in gently, without trying too hard, and then never really left.
This was my first time there. My husband is originally from Mauritius and had been many times after, but this trip was different for me. I arrived with a tourist’s eyes and an open heart, not fully realizing how deeply the island would shape one of the most important chapters of my life.
Some places impress you. Others soften you. Mauritius did both, quietly.
Seeing It With Fresh Eyes
Landing in Mauritius just before Christmas felt almost unreal. Back home, December meant cold air that stung your face, grey skies, and the kind of quiet that comes with winter. Here, it was 30 degrees, sunlight pouring in from every angle, and a breeze that carried salt, flowery scent, and something unfamiliar.
My first hot Christmas. To be fair, it felt strange for about few days. Then my body adjusted. I stopped expecting cold. I stopped missing it. The sun became normal surprisingly fast, like my system remembered something it had always known.
We rented a modest house just five minutes from Pereybere Beach. Nothing luxurious, but perfectly placed. Every morning started the same way. Bare feet, light clothes, keys in hand, song of exotic birds and the ocean waiting at the end of a 2 mins walk. No schedule. No rush. Just sand, warm water, and that impressive turquoise of the lagoon with the colours gradually transitioning to the deep blue of the Indian Ocean stretching endlessly.
Swimming there felt effortless. The water was warm and welcoming, never shocking. I didn’t have to brace myself or think twice. I could just step in and float, letting the salt hold me. That ease became a theme of the trip.
Meeting his family for the first time carried its own emotions. There were moments of nervousness, of course, but they were quickly softened by warmth. Shared meals, laughter even when words didn’t always align, long conversations around the table. Food played a huge role. Spices layered with care, generous portions, dishes passed around without ceremony. Every meal felt like an invitation rather than a performance.
One evening, we walked along Pereybere beach as the sun began to lower. The sky shifted slowly into shades of orange and pink. No crowds, no noise. Just the sound of water pulling back and forth on the white sand. That was when he proposed. Simple. Grounded. Deeply us. I remember having a mix of feelings (happy, loved, surprised, shy, excitement - you name it). Oh God so many feelings at once!
Notes From Wandering Around
Pereybere Beach - familiar, gentle, and easy to return to
Grand Bay - energetic, curious, always moving
Mont Choisy Beach - wide and open, perfect for long quiet walks
Port Louis city and market - loud, colourful, alive with stories and simple people
Rochester Falls - water carving through rock, powerful and steady

Gris Gris - dramatic cliffs where the ocean shows its strength
Ilot Gabriel - a tiny island one hour by boat, surrounded by endless blue
St Felix - peaceful, understated, and grounding
Le Morne - strong, emotional, heavy with history
Casela Safari - unexpected, playful, and full of contrasts and animals
La Vallée des Couleurs - earthy, surprising, where the land itself felt alive

What surprised me most was how different each place felt. Mauritius may be small on a map, but emotionally, it stretches wide.
The Detail That Refuses To Leave
It was the water temperature. Always warm. Always inviting.
That detail stayed with me because it mirrored the island itself. Mauritius doesn’t ask you to adapt aggressively. It doesn’t test you. It meets you gently. That softness felt rare, and maybe that’s why it lingered.
I noticed how my body responded. Shoulders dropped. Breathing slowed. My thoughts felt less sharp, less urgent. Even silence felt comfortable.
What The Island Quietly Shared With Me
Mauritius resonated with relaxation, excitement, curiosity, love, and that subtle exotic touch that’s hard to define but easy to feel. It didn’t overwhelm. It invited.
Let’s be honest. Sun and sea have always had a calming effect on me. Maybe that’s true for many people. But here, it felt deeper than relaxation. It felt like alignment.
Days didn’t feel rushed, yet they were full. We explored without pressure. Some afternoons were spent doing very little at all. And that felt just as meaningful as the days filled with movement.
I realized how rarely I allow myself that kind of pace. How often life asks for efficiency instead of presence. Mauritius reminded me that slowing down isn’t laziness. It’s listening.
A Question To Carry With You
When was the last time a place changed your rhythm, not by demanding attention, but by gently offering it?
Not the kind of trip where you chase highlights and photos. But the kind where you notice how you feel walking, eating, breathing. Where your body arrives before your mind catches up.
What would it look like to travel, or even live, a little more like that?
Until The Next Postcard
Mauritius will always be the place where I experienced my first hot Christmas, met family that would become my own, and said yes to a life that felt both grounded and expansive.
It was my first visit, seen through tourist eyes, but felt through something much deeper. A beginning wrapped in warmth, salt air, and quiet certainty.
If you ever go, let yourself move slowly. Eat generously. Swim often. Watch the sunset without checking the time.
I’ll be sending more postcards soon. Until then, take care of yourself, and leave space for places that soften you.

Awww, this was beautiful, Alexandra. I could feel the softness of this place all the way through your words. And that proposal moment… just perfect. 🥹I especially loved your reflection on slowing down. 💛
