You don’t know any of this, of course. You’re a baby. Home is simply the sound of your mother’s heartbeat against your cheek and your father’s rough hands lifting you into the air after work.

To you, nothing feels missing. Your parents make games out of ordinary things. A cardboard box becomes a castle. An old blanket stretched across two chairs becomes a secret den. A walk to the park feels like an adventure because someone is holding your hand. As children, we rarely measure life by money. We measure it by attention. By laughter. By whether someone kneels down to tie our shoelaces.

The first time you realise your family is poor isn’t because anyone tells you.
It’s because of school.

So why might a soul ever choose such a path?

Perhaps the answer has very little to do with money itself.

A father who apologised for what he couldn’t provide while never realising how much he already had.

As children, we all depend on others.
