This is very inspirational. Thank you for putting your energy into this piece. It resonates loudly, and put a lot into words that I couldn’t explain to myself, from myself haha. I plan to give this one a few re-reads.
Thanks for this beautiful article. It matches exactly with my latest decision to no longer buy more books and to, after reading this article, to read my book. Me. Thanks 🙏
This is a really incredible phrasing. But it makes me wonder, is self-development WITHOUT self-awareness self-DEVELOPMENT at all...or just more data to make the brain fatter? Maybe it polishes the mask better, but without self awareness, if anything, it seems like SELF-DEVELOPMENT can ONLY be a purely intellectual exercise. I suppose intellectualism growth can be a type of development but can we actually call it SELF development? Perhaps we've made that term mean something it doesn't - more accurately, without self-awareness, gaining knowledge is just mental expansion but it doesn't necessarily bring any kind of transformation.
I really enjoyed this article Alex. You put words to that which is quiet. I love how you peeled back the layers and changed the questions you were asking yourself.
I love how you brought attention to the body and how you emphasize the need to pay attention to how it feels— that’s bringing awareness to ourselves in that moment.
Also, you mentioned how important it is to be curious and to extend self compassion to ourselves— this is so important because it removes judgment and gives us permission to go within.
Lastly, you stated we’re not something that always needs fixing but more understanding. Reframing the questions we ask ourselves are so important and I love how you highlighted that here..
It’s my pleasure. I’ve been on a similar path for quite some time so I can totally relate. I’m also a learner. I enjoy reading books, listening to podcast and nerding out on psychology and spirituality articles, lol.
Thank you for sharing your journey with us! 🙏🏽 It was beautifully written.
Absolutely, me too! I'm currently following your account. I also shared your article with a close friend of mine who is also a learner and a doctor.
We were having a conversation about self-care, mental health, and well-being. I don't know if you're a mother. I'm thinking of starting a WhatsApp group for Substack Moms to support each other on Substack.
If you're not a mom, that's a-okay. We could share our article links and notes through the personal chat here. It's getting harder to connect with people on this platform, as it's growing rapidly these days.
I can totally relate to this! Was always looking for new methods and techniques to ‘change me’, but in my day to day life, in the small moments - I didn’t do anything differently. I still responded with anger, impatience and disconnection.. to then wonder why my life didn’t change :) monitoring yourself in the small moments does really add up. Thanks for sharing!
I love this piece. Without self-awareness, personal development, whether pursued or not, cannot make a difference. Sitting in the uncomfortable silence, or just sitting with ourselves instead of scrolling or keeping busy is probably the simplest yet most challenging ways to start a mindfulness practice that leads to more self-awareness. I’m going to read this again and incorporate some more time to be still with myself.

This really stayed with me. Especially the part about understanding instead of fixing. Felt quietly true.
